Are you wondering how to build strong number sense in your kindergarteners this year? A strong foundation in number sense is an important skill for all students to have in the early primary grades. It’s also difficult to find ways to continue to review and help students grow in this skill.

I have found that you can’t just move on once your class has the number names and formation down but you have to give them time to explore and play with the numbers. This makes it so much easier on them and you when teaching harder concepts such as addition, subtraction, etc.

Number Sense Ideas

So what are some number sense activities that are worth having in your classroom? Or you may be asking, “What do you mean, play with the numbers?” Here are some activities that I always utilize while teaching number sense to my class.

  • I Spy a Number
  • Ten Frames
  • More or Less
  • Sequencing
  • Counting one to one correspondence
  • Tally Marks

These are just a few of the activities that I utilize, and there are so many more but you will have to stay tuned for another blog post on those. Wink, wink…..

What Does It Look Like and What To Use?

I normally love to teach as hands on as possible so the students are engaged and also able to work on fine motor skills, but lets face it, we live in a digital age where computers are part of our classrooms and coming out of our “Covid” year, many classrooms will still be utilizing a lot of digital activities for their littles. And if your school is anything like mine, they want us to have technology introduced to our littles and utilized on a daily basis. So what is the best way to utilize technology for the littles? CENTERS!!!

Monthly Themes

Don’t know where to start? I have the perfect activities for you to incorporate during your center time. These monthly themed number sense activities can be purchased monthly or in one whole set. Check below for the link. Each set covers at least five different number sense skills for numbers 0-10 and 11-20.

What I found that I love about these digital number sense activities is that the students were constantly reviewing but with the themes changed up, students who needed more intense intervention were able to utilize them without becoming bored in the process.

Also, last but not least, these digital number sense activities are great not only for beginner learners and intervention, but also, these are great to utilize for assessments and progress monitoring. AND it works with Google™ Apps and Seesaw™! Plus, it makes your teacher life so much easerier. A win, win all around!!!
